Case study
2019 Volkswagen Tiguan
REAL WORK. REAL RESULTS.
2019 Volkswagen Tiguan with low engine temperature,
poor cabin heating, continuously running radiator fan, and engine warning light.
Customer Concern
The owner of this 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan reported several cooling system issues, including:
- Engine temperature gauge not reaching normal operating temperature
- Cabin heater producing little to no heat
- Radiator cooling fan running at high speed continuously
- Engine management warning light illuminated
Initial Inspection
A full diagnostic scan was carried out which revealed the following fault codes:
- P2181 – Cooling System Performance
- P0116 – Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Range/Performance
Diagnosis Process
Our technicians performed extensive live data testing while monitoring engine warm-up and cooling system operation.
Checks included:
- Monitoring Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 and Sensor 2 readings
- Comparing live data values throughout the warm-up cycle
- Inspecting radiator fan operation
- Evaluating heater performance
- Flushing and inspecting the cooling system
Live data confirmed that both coolant temperature sensors were providing similar and accurate readings, ruling out a sensor fault.
Fault Found
The electronically controlled thermostat was found to be stuck open.
This prevented the engine from reaching its correct operating temperature by allowing coolant to constantly circulate through the radiator.
Repair Completed
- Cooling system flushed and inspected
- Thermostat/water pump assembly replaced
- Cooling system refilled with new coolant
- System bled and pressure tested
- Fault codes cleared
- Vehicle road tested while monitoring live data
Outcome
Following repairs:
- Engine reached and maintained normal operating temperature
- Temperature gauge returned to the centre position as intended
- Cabin heater performance restored
- Radiator fan operation returned to normal
- Fault codes P2181 and P0116 did not return
- Vehicle successfully completed final road testing
VEHICLE
Volkswagen Tiguan
Year: 2019
THE PROBLEM
low engine temperature, poor cabin heating, continuously running radiator fan, and engine warning light.
DIAGNOSIS
Checked sensors, cooling fan, heater, and flushed the cooling system.
THE REPAIR
- Cooling system flushed and inspected
- Thermostat/water pump assembly replaced
- Fault codes cleared
- Cooling system refilled with new coolant
THE RESULT
Normal engine temperature restored, cabin heating and fan operation corrected, no returning fault codes, and road test passed.
